Week 3 - WEB Generations

Different type of webs
   WEB 1.0
The first implementation of the web represents the Web 1.0, which, according to Berners-Lee, could be considered the "read-only web." In other words, the early web allowed us to search for information and read it. There was very little in the way of user interaction or content contribution. However, this is exactly what most website owners wanted: Their goal for a website was to establish an online presence and make their information available to anyone at any time. I like to call this "brick-and-mortar thinking applied to the web," and the web as a whole hasn't moved much beyond this stage yet.

This web is still being used by some companies and organizations. The down side of it is that it doesn't allow any interaction among the owner and the users.

WEB 2.0
The term Web 2.0 is associated with web applications that facilitate participatory information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. A Web 2.0 site allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators (prosumers) of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where users (consumers) are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites, hosted services, web applications, mashups and folksonomies (Berners-Lee 2000).
This web facilitates communication.Users are able to interact with the owner of the web site. Users are now able to contribute by adding information, posting commets etc.
Usage

WEB 3.0
The Semantic Web is a "web of data" that enables machines to understand the semantics, or meaning, of information on the World Wide Web. It extends the network of hyperlinked human-readable web pages by inserting machine-readable metadata about pages and how they are related to each other, enabling automated agents to access the Web more intelligently and perform tasks on behalf of users. The term was coined by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web and director of the World Wide Web Consortium, which oversees the development of proposed Semantic Web standards. He defines the Semantic Web as "a web of data that can be processed directly and indirectly by machines.
Purpose
The main purpose of the Semantic Web is driving the evolution of the current Web by allowing users to use it to its full potential, thus allowing them to find, share, and combine information more easily. Humans are capable of using the Web to carry out.(Technet Summit , November 2006).
In this web, communication is facilitated by an avatar, which can simulate real life enviroments, like in second life, greatly used for educational purposes.

WEB 4.0
The Symbiotic web, once the metadata are prearranged like it did on web 3.0, Human mind & Machines (Binary language) can interact in Symbiosis using this Web 4.0 technology concept.
In simple words, A machine can also be clever on reading the contents and animations, and react in the form of executing and deciding what to execute first to load the website fast with superior quality and performance and build more commanding interfaces.
The Web 4.0 is still a subversive thought in progress. Clear definition of the Web 4.0 is not into the internet till now. But we hope, it will not take more days. We are very close to the future web technology called as “Web 4.0”.

This web is considered by some people and researchers as the artificial intelligence generation by having on -line agents that speak, think, and communicate like human beings.

Finally it should be said that all Web generations have contributed and keep contributing to all fields.
As teachers we should consider ourselves fortunate, for we are able to enjoy their benefits.
The Web evolution has opened new horizons of endless possibilities that as responsible, interested and thoughtful professionals we ought to explore and take advantage of.

  1. Hi Maite. Very cozy blog. I have a question for you: What kind of Web 2.0 tools would you use in your classrooms?
